When It’s Time for Assisted Living

There are certain circumstances or situations that could indicate it may be time to transition from independent living to assisted living. The following are some examples of common signs that you or a loved one could benefit from assisted living:

  • Difficulty managing prescriptions – failing to refill prescriptions, forgetting to take medications, taking the wrong dosage or not following directions.
  • Experiencing difficulty managing finances – forgetting to pay bills, unable to properly budget for necessary expenses such as food, utilities or property tax, or overdrafting a bank account.
  • Experiencing money problems – overspending, purchasing unnecessary items or opening multiple credit cards/taking out various loans.
  • Declining ability to care for oneself – needing assistance with various activities of daily living, such as bathing, eating, grooming and mobility or finding it difficult to make healthy, well-balanced meals on a regular basis.
  • Experiencing difficulty keeping and maintaining the home – as we age, it may be a little more troublesome to keep the house as tidy as it once was.
  • Experiencing feelings of depression, isolation or loneliness – occasional depression and feelings of loneliness or isolation are common. However, they are typically not a common occurance and could be a sign that it’s time to look for more opportunities for social interaction which can be found within a senior living community.
  • Worsening of medical conditions – as medical conditions appear or progress, it could become more difficult to handle daily activities.
  • Experiencing an increase in the number of falls – falls can result in injury, and are especially dangerous as we age. If trips and falls have increased, help may be needed in order to ensure one’s safety.

If any of the above situations sound familiar, it may be time to consider making the move to assisted living.

How to Talk To Parents About Moving to Assisted Living

Having a conversation about assisted living with your parents can be difficult. Luckily, there are some things you can do to make things easier for both you and your parents.

Some things you can do to make this type of discussion easier for all involved include:

  • Using positive wording when discussing assisted living.

To help you make your list, visit our blog that discuss the signs that your loved one may benefit from assisted living.
  • Do your research before starting the conversation – research community options, pricing, financial assistance and other information that may be helpful to your parents as they consider moving to an assisted living community
  • Listen and validate your parents’ concerns and fears
  • Don’t rush the conversation – make sure you have plenty of time to not only discuss your concerns, but to hear what your parents have to say about the topic
