3 Ways to Combat Arthritis

The Cabana at Jensen Dunes

Assisted Living and Memory Support

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in America and affects more than 50 million adults, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

Doctors have identified about 100 types of this joint disease – all of which bring inflammation that can cause fatigue and severe pain.

While there are many prescription medications to treat arthritis, here are three alternative ways you can help alleviate discomfort:

  • Try hot and cold therapy. How do you reduce swelling after twisting your ankle? You ice it. The same concept applies to arthritic joints. On the flip side, heating pads and warm showers or baths can also help decrease inflammation.
  • Manage your weight. Maintaining a healthy weight is essential to alleviating pressure on your joints – especially the hips, knees and feet. Your weight also plays a role in your overall mobility. If you don’t know what’s considered a healthy weight for you, consult your primary care provider.
  • Stay moving. It may seem counterintuitive, but controlled, aerobic activity is a must for managing pain. At The Cabana, we offer a variety of low-impact fitness classes, like water aerobics and yoga, designed with our residents in mind. And exercise and weight management go hand in hand.
