Allergy Season Is Here: How to Help Your Senior with Allergies

The Cabana at Jensen Dunes

Assisted Living and Memory Support community on the Treasure Coast serving the Jensen Beach, Stuart and Port St. Lucie areas.

It’s that time of year again: the skies are clear, the weather is warm, and across the state, Floridians are starting to sneeze, sniffle and squint their way through allergy season. It’s a season that takes a toll on everyone – especially seniors.

It’s a common misconception that all allergies are developed in childhood. In fact, many people develop new allergies as they age, when symptoms can become more harmful and diagnosis more difficult.

Below are some tips on helping your senior get through allergy season:

  • Always consult a doctor about recommended treatment. What works for one person may not work for another, and seniors are more likely to experience conflicting medication or side effects.
  • Avoid antihistamines. Most over-the-counter allergy medications fall in this category. These drugs have potentially dangerous side effects for older adults, including drowsiness, confusion and dizziness.
  • Keep an eye on the weather. One way to mitigate the effect of allergies is to limit the time your senior spends in high-pollen areas, so be sure to watch air quality reports.

Overcoming allergies can be a challenge, but with proper treatment and care, your senior can enjoy this beautiful time of year in Florida. For more information about the personalized care we provide to our residents at The Cabana, please give us a call at 772-332-1000. We’d love to speak with you!
