Activities for a Meaningful Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a special holiday when we honor those lost while serving our country. And at The Cabana, we are getting in the patriotic spirit! Below are a few of our favorite activities that can add a little red-white-and-blue flavor to your barbecue, while engaging the older adults who are there:

  • Play some throwback tunes. Transport back in time through music! Pay homage to WWII veterans through classics like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and “White Cliffs of Dover.” Or, pick your favorite songs from the ‘50s or ‘60s. Music from any era is a powerful tool to stimulate memory, because melodies are easier to access than names, dates or places.
  • Introduce storytelling time. Ask questions, reflect on your family tree or simply … listen. Engage as the older members of your family recount memories and experiences. During or after wartime, they may have encountered hardship and adversity. If they are willing, have them share how they got through those obstacles.
  • Bring out the games. Cornhole, horseshoes and ring toss make for perfect backyard pastimes – as they only require a simple swing of an arm. If you want to go the extra step, choose teams and have a tournament. If weather isn’t cooperating, take the party inside for a fun game of U.S. History trivia.

And one more thing: Don’t forget to include The Cabana in your holiday weekend plans. We invite you and your family to join us this Saturday, May 26 for our Memorial Day Cookout for barbecue, music, trivia and much more. Don’t forget your bathing suits and sunscreen!

No matter your plans, be sure to take a moment to recognize the brave men and women of our armed forces and enjoy time spent with family. Happy Memorial Day!
